House bands and a rotating list of guest musicians perform live music nightly. Dark and dingy, it's just what you'd expect to find in a downstairs ski town party bar. Expect cheap drink specials (think shots), people who don't realize the effects of alcohol at altitude, and a raucous time that frequently continues on long after closing time with partiers leaving to grab a slice of pizza at Vendettas or Pazzos before crashing back at the condo.

Gettin' Your Groove On: Samana

If you can move your body (or think you can), or if you just can't live without your big-city dance club for longer than a week, then this is your spot. Disco lighting? Check. Bartenders that look like they've just left the catwalk? Uh huh. Hottest DJs ever? Yep. You're going to be sized up in here, so bring your best moves and bust 'em like you weren't in ski boots all day.

Real Local's Hangout: Sandbar

A hangout primarily for local singles because of it's West Vail location (near the two big grocery stores), this spot has gone through a few re-incarnations, but has remained a hot spot for bands, dancing, pool and lots and lots of libations. Don't dress up for this party, you'll be branded as an out-of-towner. Don't forget to make good use of the fabulous FREE Town of Vail buses which will take you from Vail Village and Lionshead to the bar where the locals play.

Where Everybody Knows Your Name (even when they don't, really): The Tap Room

At the top of Bridge Street (party central for Vail), this is the bar for anyone looking for a truly traditional apres ski scene. All of the usual titles like "the place to see and be seen" apply, and all ages feel comfortable in this bar/restaurant that features warm barvarian woodwork, a crackling fireplace and a bartender that you'll swear you know from home. Jeans mix with furs, Mojitos mix with Coors Beer types, and you'll swear that you went to school with that guy sitting next to the famous actress.

Honorable mentions:

o The Red Lion - Vail's first bar. More of a 30+ scene, go for the nachos, stay for the atmosphere.
o Vendetta's - One of the first "hangouts" with it's fair share of wild tales. Long known as a ski patrol hangout, great spot for pizza.
o Covered Bridge Coffee (daytime hours), best place for a cup of joe before you go!

Post Script: Lionshead (the western section of Vail) also holds it's own with Garfinkles, Bart and Yeti's and access to Adventure Ridge, arguably the best FAC (Friday Afternoon Club) around.

In this installment of our guide to skiing we look at skiing trips...

While budget may be your first consideration, there are other factors that you will need to consider when you begin to plan your skiing trip and need to select a resort; these should include the quality of the resort and where it is, as well as its character and overall ambiance. So, let's look at each of those important considerations individually...

When it comes to location, Canada, France, and the United States are the most popular destinations, but also attracting a good number of skiers are Andorra, Austria, Bulgaria, Italy and, of course, Switzerland. The time of the year will dictate pricing, but keep in mind that the more established countries will probably have higher prices. Planning your trip to coincide with the beginning or end of the ski season can net you significant discounts.

As far as costs go, just some of the outlay for your trip will go towards travel and lodging as well as expenses for food and beverages, but you must also remember that you will be paying for passes, maybe lessons, equipment rental, and a very important, but often over-looked expense, insurance. Research the cost of things at resorts as well as the costs of getting to and staying there. Keep in mind that the laws of supply and demand have a tendency to drive up prices in these out-of-the-way places in the mountains. Doing a little research on-line in advance can save you some money on things you will need, as will taking items with you, such as sunscreen, that are sure to have a higher price tag once you get there.

Once you have selected where you want to go, take a look at what that location offers in the way of facility types and quality. Major considerations will include lodging types (everything from dormitories to hotels to chalets); access to eating establishments and night clubs; and finally what types of activities are available, as perhaps you wish to snowboard, toboggan or ice skate while on your trip. Prices for all of these things can be drastically different from resort to resort, and you cannot rely on the price to give you a clue as to quality. Lesser known resorts in emerging countries (for example Andorra and Bulgaria) may well have facilities that are equal to or better more famous resorts, and at a lower cost.

Then you'll want to look into the character and ambiance of potential resorts. Your personal vision of what a ski vacation means to you should drive your choice as to resort selection - you may wish to have a more cutting-edge resort with all the modern conveniences, or you may wish to forego high-speed internet in lieu of a small village where you can taste and feel the local culture. If you see yourself sitting by a relaxing fire and turning in early, you will want to find a quiet resort that does not encourage a lot of partying; but if you want to party on your vacation, that will affect your choice, as well. You can find a resort that caters to your taste with a quiet, homey atmosphere, a well-defined party vibe, or a little of both and researching on the front end is the best way to determine what will make your stay a good one.

Skiing Arizona - Phoenix Ski Resorts

In a desert state and a city where the temperature reaches 38C on an average of 89 days a year, it may be a surprise that you can go skiing on real snow, on real mountains to come, only a few hours from the city of Phoenix, Arizona.

Snowfall in Phoenix itself is extremely rare, the city only an average of 5 days per year when the temperature is below freezing, and since records began, snow fell only seven times - the last of which was in January 2001 (the first snow has fallen in 22Years).

However, much to the enjoyment of the Phoenix skiers and snowboarders, there are several ski resorts within a few hours drive, which are perfect for a day or weekend and snow lovers should request "for the white stuff to satisfy.

Arizona Snowbowl is located in the San Francisco Peaks in the Coconino National Forest, just two hours drive from Phoenix. The ski area offers over 2300 meters of vertical drop and 32 scenic hiking trails, the 777 hectares and the coverage ArizonanDesert climate means the resort enjoys skiing and many sunny days.

Those who can quiet their skis to visit the Flagstaff Nordic Center, located just seven miles north of Snowbowl prefer. Be warned though - the people come here to skirather than the party so if you are looking for a wild time to be the better solution to stay in a hotel in Phoenix and just commute to the ski areas during the day.

Livigno - Skiing in Italy
