Disney Vacation Planning - Let Birnbaum Be Your Guide

Imagine having never been to Walt Disney World and you're trying to plan a vacation for you and your family. Where do you begin? How do you navigate four theme parks, two water parks, 26 resorts, entertainment complexes, dining, and the rest of the magic? How do you determine how long to stay? How much time do you spend in each theme park? These are all the questions that first-time visitors to Walt Disney World have to face when making their vacation plans to the Vacation Kingdom of the World.

Well, put your mind at ease because Steve Birnbaum composed the one and only "official guidebook" to the destination, Birnbaum's Official Guide to Walt Disney World. And because of the notoriety and the increasing popularity of this book through the years, six others have joined the annually published collection of Birnbaum guides to the Disney parks, six in total for Walt Disney World and one for Disneyland. Even if you're a seasoned expert, you will learn a thing or two or three when you read the most comprehensive guide to the Vacation Kingdom of the 'World' and the extraordinary amount of detail that the author/editor provides readers like you. Whether you're a "first-timer" or "seasoned pro," you'll find the Birnbaum guides invaluable tools when planning your next vacation to Walt Disney World or Disneyland.

The guide that started it all is the Birnbaum's Official Guide to Walt Disney World. This is the most comprehensive volume on the subject and covers off everything from an initial introduction to the resort, to traveling there, the theme parks and water parks, resorts, dining, shopping, sports and golf, recreations and more. And if you're confused by all of the ticket and package product Disney has to offer, it will become quite clear by the time you finish this guide. The author/editor goes into great detail about each and every one of these topics and even offers up helpful hints to help you avoid any hiccups that may come about. After having read this book from cover to cover, I can honestly say if there's a subject or attraction or show not covered in this book, it simply doesn't exist.

Next up, Birnbaum's Walt Disney World Without Kids is an abbreviated version of the first book but targeted to adult-only travel. As you can imagine, in addition to the theme park, water park, and resort coverage, the main focus in on the 'adult' fun including golf, entertainment, and spa indulgences.

While you're reading through the main guidebook, your kids will love Birnbaum's Walt Disney World For Kids .This book is written from the perspective our younger travelers and makes them feel like part of the planning process.

If you're planning a Disney Cruise, you'll love Birnbaum's Disney Cruise Line. The definitive resource for booking a Disney Cruise Line cruise-only or land and sea package. Everything you need to know about booking a Disney Cruise Line vacation is featured within the pages including amazing details on the ships, dining, shore excursions, staterooms, and packages. Plus helpful tools and tips are presented throughout to help you "navigate" booking your Disney Cruise Line vacation!

Two other minor editions make up the collection of six books, the Birnbaum's Walt Disney World Dining Guide, a complete guide to all themepark, resort, and entertainment districts, and Birnbaum's Walt Disney World Pocket Parks Guide, a relatively new guidebook addition to the Birnbaum family, this book is an on-site reference guide to each of the theme parks, water parks, and recreation, and for the ultimate in convenience, it fits comfortably into your pocket!

Traveling to the west coast, then Birnbaum's Official Guide to the Disneyland Resort is a must have. The same comprehensive approach is taken for this Disney destination on the other side of the country.

Whether you're traveling alone, with kids, with friends, or cruising, you will find all of these guidebooks extremely helpful in the planning process. I strongly suggest that as soon as you decide that you're going, seek out the books you need right away because Disney vacation planning can take a lot of time and the author / editor offers great advice and helpful tips.  Happy planning.

Tobago - The Place for Your Vacation Holiday - Paradise

Tobago

Tobago has a land area of 300km² (116miles²), and is approximately 42km (26 miles) long and 11km (7 miles) wide. The population is about 51,000, approximately 17,500 of which live in the capital, Scarborough. The climate is tropical, and the islands lie just south of the Atlantic hurricane belt. It was designated as a protected crown reserve on April 17 1776 following representations by Soame Jenyns, a UK MP, who was responsible for development in Tobago. It has remained a protected reserve ever since.

This forested area has a great biodiversity including many species of birds, mammals, frog and (non-poisonous) snakes. It is also one of the most approachable areas of rain-forest since it is relatively small and there are government appointed guides at various locations, who charge very reasonable rates.

The southern area of the island, from Scarborough southwards, is an area called the lowlands. This is a more commercial area of Tobago, and is more dedicated to housing and tourist related activities. This land is particularly flat, although the areas around Buccoo and Bon Accord are in close proximity to the lagoon and swamp land, and are so more affected by high water levels and mosquitoes.

Telephone and Internet Access

The international dialing code for Tobago is 1-868 followed by the seven digit telephone number. Mobile phones that run on various network will work in Tobago but the signal strength varies throughout the Island. Internet access has improved and there are a number of internet cafes sprung up over the last 2 to 3 years.

Driving

There are plenty of car rental companies on the island, just be sure to choose wisely, both in terms of quality of vehicle and cover on insurance. Driving is on the left in Tobago, the same as in England, but the opposite to most of the rest of the world. Unfortunately, the driving skills of the locals leave a lot to be desired, as you will find some drivers crawl along talking to all their friends as they drive. The authorities are just about to implement a law to stop driver using their mobile phones while at the wheel, that can only help. This coupled with the odd dog, cow and goat crossing the road, people stopping every ten feet to pick up/drop off, and dodging the pot-holes, makes for interesting driving! When driving and discovering the Island you will experience some of the most spectacular scenic routes but you need to keep your eye on the road, as the road is pot-holed and bends and turns at quite alarming angles. But it is journey worth doing, just take your time, be careful, and enjoy it!

The International Airport

Tobago's International airport is Crown Point, on the southernmost tip of the island. It's a fairly small airport in terms of those seen in Europe and the US, but generally quite efficient. When entering the country, once all necessary immigration and baggage collection has been done, you will be greeted by a wall of taxi drivers, hotel porters and families looking for incoming relations. Most of the hotels arrange a 'meet and greet' at this point and will use either cars or buses to take you to your hotel. If, on the other hand, you have made no prior arrangements, then there are plenty of taxi drivers available, all ready and willing to help.

Crime

Tobago is virtually the opposite of Trinidad, and at times it's hard to believe the two islands share a common flag. Trinidad newspapers constantly tell shocking stories of theft, murder, abduction and all kinds of other crimes, whereas Tobago is proud of its safe and secure status. Don't get me wrong, it may not be the safest places on the planet, but you can feel secure walking around at night, for as long as you travel around sensibly. Try not to walk around with large amounts of cash, showing off huge amounts of jewelery, and electronic gadgets. If you are sensibly careful, then you should have no problems.

Accommodation

Tobago has a good mix of types of accommodation from small guest house and apartments, hotels, tourist resorts, to luxury villas. Some of the hotels offer an all inclusive package which appear to be popular and cost effective, for a more exclusive dream holiday a lot of visitors book a luxury villa with panoramic sea views, your own private swimming pools and just to make it more relaxing, daily maid service is included in the price.

There's so much to do

For those of you wishing for a active holiday then there are many activities available such as Golf, Fishing, Cycling, Horse Riding, Water sports and more.

Sailing.

Tobago is a great sailing ground with lots of bays to make anchor and explore the other parts of the Island. You and Charter day sails or Stay & Sail Packages and take a trip further a field.

Cycling

Bicycles are a good way of seeing the island and can be rented locally. There is a Cycling Classic Festival in September, when cars make way for the hordes of cyclists from all around the world. Both on and off-road cycling is plentiful.

Water sports

Boat tours are one of the most popular ways to explore the Island. Several operators work the waters, offering full day trips with a barbeque lunch or sunset trips. Sailing is very popular and half day or full day trips can be arranged on an array of sailing boats from 50 foot yachts to hobby cats.

For those how just like a relaxing boat trip then the glass bottom boats are for you. Explore the underwater world through the crystal clear Caribbean waters. Jet skis are available for hirer and for those more adventurous, then you need to try kite surfing.

Horse Riding

Those who prefer a slower, earth-bound tour can go horse trekking including beach ride and swim packages with tuition.

Golf

There are two excellent pristine courses on the island. Tobago Plantations on wind-blown Atlantic fifteen and Mount Irvine on the Caribbean side.

Scuba Diving & Snorkeling

Tobago is one of the best scuba diving sports in the south-eastern Caribbean, yet it has relatively few divers visiting its pristine coral reefs, volcanic formations and marine wrecks.

The aquamarine seas around Tobago are home to 300 species of south

Atlantic coral and a variety of spectacular multicolored fish, including the neon orange- and - blue parrot fish, the black- and- yellow- striped sergeant majors and every species of angel fish, not to mention such larger species such whales, stingrays, sharks, dolphins, turtles, squid, and an enormous number of manta rays.

There are a number of certified scuba diving operators.

Sport Fishing

Chartering a sport fishing boat is exciting, rich picking of Marlin, sale fish, Tuna and Dolphin (not flipper!) are caught all year round.

Wildlife

The tourist board holds a list of well-established, trained guides, offering hiking and wildlife tours. There are over 430 different species of birds, 620 different species of butterflies, 2300 different shrubs and plants, 700 of them orchids.

There are 100 different mammals including a huge variety of bats, and 70 different reptiles. It's little wonder that some of the country's most regular visitors are international film-makers shooting key sequences for wildlife documentaries, like David Attenborough's, The Trials of Life.

Should you want any further information on the Paradise Island of Tobago? Then please do not hesitate in contacting the author of this article as I am now living and enjoying Tobago every day and would like to help.

Vacation Scams - How to Spot Them

Again, your mother was right. Actually, she was right twice. One, nothing in life is free and two, if sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

One of the biggest and longest running scams to date is the Vacation Fraud, where you or a loved one is told that they have won a free vacation package or a glamorous cruise getaway. If not totally "free", these "agents" say that they can get you that dream tour for a rock-bottom price. At this point, you, like many other law-abiding citizens start thinking "what could possibly go wrong?" A lot, apparently.

Let's just start with the obvious: you will not get a free vacation. Granted, there are rare packages out there from reputable travel agencies that may be free, but err on the side of caution. The most common travel and vacation scams include the following:

The Dubious Travel Agency Scam - You are called and told you are getting a free vacation package but you must pay "fees" to reserve this opportunity. Then after you pay these fees, the "travel agency" can no longer be found. Their phone line has been disconnected and there is no way you can get your money back. Another variation of this scam is telling you that you've been booked on a luxurious vacation trip verycheaply, but this is only for a "limited time". You are then asked to pay a "reservation fee" immediately (and this is usually a big amount) to assure your slot. It's only after payment that the "travel agent" tells you that your vacation dates are not available or, after some time, will tell you that the offer has already "expired". Then the "Agent" also disappears, along with your money.

Plane Tickets for Free- Here, they call you and say you have won two plane tickets to great spots like the Bahamas. What they're not saying is that you must book your hotel and buy your meals from the company that's giving away the tickets. If you stop and do the math before you accept this "free ticket" offer, you can easily calculate that the amount for food and accommodation easily covers the cost of a plane fare because prices have been so inflated.

The "Free Vacation" - You fly all the way to Hawaii or Mexico, ready to start your vacation, but you find out that you are booked in a small and dirty hostel with bad food. If you check out, they tell you that you void your return ticket. So, you can either stay in your bad hotel or pay a horribly inflated fee to get out of it so you can sleep in a decent hotel.

The Time Share Scam - You are given a free vacation, but before you enjoy it, you have to sit through a presentation from a timeshare salesman. Sometimes, you're not even told about the obligatory timeshare lecture before you reach your destination. Oftentimes, to get food tickets and accommodation, people have been forced to sit in through long lectures and end up being forced to sign contracts that are also fraudulent. In some cases, when the vacationers try to get away, they have been subjected to bullying and other unscrupulous tactics from these sales agents.

"Become a Travel Agent" Scam - Someone tells you that you're better off to be a travel agent because it saves you a lot of money in the long run. As a travel agent, they say, you get a lot of discounts and freebies while you're on holiday. The catch is, you have to pay them a "fee" to become an instant travel agent and when you become one, you realize you can't avail yourself of the discounts because your credentials are not recognized by any travel authority.

Fraudulent Vacation Discount Cards - You pay for a vacation card thinking it will make your vacation a little cheaper, but then you realize that the card has so many restrictions that you can't get the discounts you're entitled to. OR if you do get a discount, it's just taken off a "special price" and still comes down to the same price as everyone else is paying.

Protect yourself from these travel scams by following your gut instinct and being sceptical. Don't be afraid to say no and assert yourself when these "agents" become pushy. Never give your credit card number over the phone in the name of "reserving" your slot. If they give you a time limit, say you need to think about it; being hurried is usually a sign of a scam. Before accepting the package, go the distance - check the hotel, the airline, etc. - and make sure they are working with this promotion at the prices the agent says they are. Buy tickets and packages only from genuine agencies and in person, if possible and remember, offers from phone calls or spam email are more likely to be scams.

Things To Do Before Leaving On Vacation

Going on vacation is an exciting time and there can be all kinds of last minute problems and annoyances that can arise that can keep you from taking care of things that you should before you leave. Unfortunately, remembering those things that you should have done later on is not going to help, so here are some things to be sure to check off on your list before you leave on vacation:

* Lock all doors and windows throughout the house.

* Unplug most electronic items especially those that are expensive or may have valuable data on them. These can include your TV set, stereo, and especially computers. If a storm comes through while you are away, these items can be damaged beyond repair simply by being plugged into the wall outlet, so remove that possibility before you leave. Also, if you use a modem it would be good idea to unplug it as damage can also happen due to the phone connection used.

* There is no need for your water heater to continue to operate at a high level since it will not be used throughout the time that you are gone, so turn it down to a low setting.

* Call and cancel your paper and mail delivery while you are gone. You certainly don't want newspapers and mail piling up outside your home and sending a clear signal to burglars that your house is an easy target.

* Leave a radio or something going in the house that makes sound and can be viewed as an indication that someone is home.

* Disconnect the garage door so that it cannot be operated by remote control from the outside. Usually there is a lever that you can pull on the opener that can accomplish this easily.

* Unplug your washing machine hoses. These can easily break and if they do while you are away for several days it could cause near catastrophic flood damage to your home before you would be able to do anything about it.

* If you have pets make sure that they have an automatic feeder and plenty of food and water, if you choose not to board them in a kennel or leave them with someone else. Also be sure that the heating/AC system is set to keep things comfortable for them in the house while you are gone. If you do choose to leave your pets at home it's a good idea to arrange for someone to stop by daily and check on them and spend a little time with them too.

There are other reminders that would be good to have on your away list too, but these should be a good start to help keep you focused on necessary items to take care of before leaving on any fun family vacations.

Top Five Vacation Travel Destinations In The World

The Caribbean

A vacation at one of the islands in the Caribbean offers excitement as well as relaxation in a stunning, tropical setting. The eastern region of the islands, commonly known as the Lesser Antilles, Tobago and Trinidad, begins just east of Puerto Rico and stretches just about to the coast of Venezuela. These islands include impressive mountains, rain forests and black, as well as white, sandy beaches.

The western portion of the Caribbean is well-known for the ancient Mayan ruins that abound, as well as for the luxurious resorts, carnivals and local festivities occurring frequently throughout the year. St. Maarten, St. Thomas, San Juan and Barbados are among the most popular travel destinations in the southern Caribbean and offer tourists an authentic island experience.

France

Paris, France, home of the famous Eiffel Tower, remains one of the world's top travel destinations for honeymooners and travelers alike. Other cities in France that provide an ideal spot to vacation if you're looking for beauty, charm and a rich sense of history are Lyon and Marseille. These gorgeous cities are filled with fascinating museums and feature numerous fragrant flower gardens.

Rome, Italy

Rome, Italy is perhaps one of the most beautiful and historic of European cities and also one of the most often visited by travelers. Ancient monuments, impressive museums, fountains as well as medieval churches and palaces, all lend to the old world charm of the city. There are also numerous restaurants offering delicious Italian cuisine and plenty of exciting nightlife to be had as well.

Other popular vacation spots to visit in Italy are the Vatican and St. Peter's Cathedral, as well as the city of Venice, which was uniquely built right in the center of a lagoon. Venice has been deemed one of the most romantic and beautiful cities in the entire world with meandering canals and interesting architecture everywhere you look.

Hawaii

With many gorgeous and unspoiled beaches to choose from, Hawaii and its smaller surrounding islands offer lush resorts, crystal blue waters and plenty of sunshine to visitors. Besides Hawaii, often called the "Big Island", there are five other beautiful islands to visit such as Maui, which is the second largest of the group and features stunning volcanoes as well as breathtaking waterfalls.

Other islands include Lanai, which is famous for its impressive rock formations as well as the distinct ambiance of romance, luxury and privacy. The state's capital, Honolulu, is located on the island of Oahu, which is home to the majority of Hawaii's population and boasts a vibrant mix of culture and entertainment.

Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas, the most populous city in Nevada, is often referred to as "Sin City" or the "largest adult playground" in the world. But this famous vacation spot is no longer just about gambling and casinos. Now there are numerous family-friendly hotels, resorts and activities to choose from as well as plenty of exciting nightlife along the Strip for the adults.

People vacationing in Las Vegas may also choose to visit nearby Lake Mead, which is the largest man-made lake in the United States and is only 22 miles from the Strip. The Hoover Dam, located in Black Canyon on the Colorado River about 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas, is also another impressive sight to see while visiting this area.

Fun Things to Do on Your Vacation!

That's the intent of this article, to wake up some ideas in your head, and plan for things to do in Florida and any of your travels.

When we venture down to Florida or anywhere for that fact of the matter, we first figure out what activities we definitely don't want to miss. Here is our list of favorite things to do on vacation...

1. Sit on the beach and play in the ocean. This is a no brainer. We love to walk the beach, bathe in the sun, play in the waves, and watch the beautiful people.

What types of things do you do on your vacation? What activities do you have planned? Do you relax, go active, or a little of both?

2. Play golf. Golf is a great game. There are excellent golf courses all over the world to choose from and you can even plan an entire golf vacation.

3. Go fishing. Deep sea fishing or fishing from a pier is a blast. If you have never done this try it once, you'll love it.

4. Other sporting activities like scuba, snorkeling, water skiing, parasailing, renting jet skis, or whatever. There are a ton of water activities to choose from.

5. Day trips and tours are awesome choices. Rent a boat for the day. Take a barefoot cruise. Venture over to Orlando and go to Disney World or any theme park. Dinner cruises, exploring, hiking, tours at local sites, and anything else that you can think of.

6. Go shopping! Yes, the ladies will love this one and probably already have it planned. I hate to shop, but it is actually fun when I am on vacation. It wears me out though. Take some extra money and visit the local shops, find souvenirs, and spend some of that hard-earned money.

7. Drive around. We have rented convertibles or motorcycles for a couple of days and just explored the area. One time, we went from Miami to Key West and spent the day there. Another time, we traveled up the A1A highway along the Atlantic Coast of Florida, enjoying the luxurious homes, yachts, and views. You can even do this as a weekend getaway. Find a cool spot that's only 6 hours or less away and take off. We always have fun doing this.

8. Take in local entertainment, events, restaurants, and such. Go dancing, find the best watering holes, do something romantic, party likes its 1999. Remember, you are on vacation and it's time to have some fun and do stuff you don't usually get to do at home.

The list is as endless as your imagination. These are just a few general ideas that we always plan on doing. Be creative and try new things.

Enjoy your trip, have a good time, and tell us your stories!!!

Top Vacation Spots in the United States

If your looking for the top vacation spots in the united states, you'll generally find that they are located near the coasts. There are literally hundreds of places to choose from, but here are some of the top places that I have been to.

New Jersey beaches

New jersey has some of the finest beaches on the east coast of the united states. From the north eastern tip of Sandy hook, with old military forts and majestic views of the Manhattan skyline to the pizza filled aroma of Seaside heights, there are plenty of beaches to choose from to take your family. One place I recommend is Wildwood where there are two boardwalks filled with rides and games for your kids and loved ones. You can find literally hundreds of low cost hotels and motels to choose from, and most are located just a short walk from all the attractions.

Naples, Florida

Naples Florida is located on the southwestern edge of the florida coast. With world renowned architecture and old style building design, there is plenty of things for you to do in Naples. One leading attraction of this vacation destination is 5th ave district, where you can shop at some of the finest stores in Florida. In the spring, the weather is perfect and you can watch the sunset from the famous 2nd ave. pier. Every sunset is more majestic then the last, and you'll be sure to enjoy plenty of night time activities as well.

Top spots in San Diego, California

San Diego has been widely regarded as one of the top vacation spots in the United States. With its warm weather year round, and wide variety of activities from sea world to amusement parks, its sure to be a winner with your whole family. Another major attraction you can visit is the San Diego zoo. Some of the highlights of the zoo include the flamingo lagoon, the polar bear plunge and elephant mesa. Parking at the zoo is relatively cheap and there are a wide variety of restaurants to choose from.

Fun in New York city

By far one of the top vacation spots in the U.S. Would have to be New York City. There is so much to do in New York that its hard to list everything. You could visit the Statue of liberty, take a ride on a speedboat, or view the city from the air with a helicopter tour. You can find virtually any type of cuisine out there, at any time of the day or night, and be able to do almost anything your heart desires.

If you really want to find great vacation spots, check out our growing list of cheap vacation spots in the United States, which is updated regularly.

Health Benefits of Taking a Vacation

Taking vacations allows time for relaxing and enjoying yourself in being free from your everyday responsibilities at home and at the office. It is your moment to travel and explore the world. Vacations also bring unforgettable memories that will last for a lifetime. Making good memories is good for the soul. You will not only enjoy it, but also become mentally, physically and spiritually healthy.

Before giving you the importance of vacation, here are some tips on how to take a vacation:

1. Make sure you have a vacation budget.
2. Let your boss and colleagues know it early.
3. Reserve your flights and hotels early.
4. Pack light.
5. Enjoy the planning and packing as part of the overall experience
6. Leave your phone and laptop home.

Specialist Corner

Studies show that taking a vacation can lessen the risk of dying from coronary heart disease and help live a healthier life.

Experts consent that people who seize their health seriously should also learn to take vacation time seriously. Researchers from the State University of New York at Oswego conducted a survey of more than 12,000 men ages 35 to 57 who had participated in a large heart disease prevention trial. The results, presented last March at a meeting of the American Psychosomatic Society in Savannah, suggest that men who take vacations every year reduce their overall risk of death by about 20 percent, and their risk of death from heart disease by as much as 30 percent.

When the mind feels pressured and blocked with ideas, the effects on the body can be undesirable. One very important characteristic of mental health and well being is simply setting set the time to allow your mind to do nothing. It is in the method of not being hectic that one is free to reflect, deliberate, refresh and generally be grateful in the world around you - a world which you are usually to busy to recognize.

When the Doctor says Rest

When you get sick, the most common thing you hear from your doctor and peers is to get plenty of rest. This was meant exactly that. Rest, with no activities suggested whatsoever. The art of doing nothing when you are unwell drains your mind from noise and hassle of the world. As stress and depression rise, having a time for regular outings and vacations can give you some solutions to maintaining a healthy condition.

Many people plan a vacation wherein fast paced activities are planned everyday for the week. Therefore, the vacation often ends up being as demanding as the job that you left behind. A lot of people evoke the feeling of being crushed by the time they have got back from their holiday, and this is the point. In order to get the bursting health benefits of a vacation, it is important for you to do as little as possible and set aside the time to relax your mind and soul that you need to replenish so you can return home feeling rejuvenated.

Take it Easy and Unwind

Idleness is often sulked upon in modern society, yet it is a significant part of your human mental health. It allows you to collect thoughts, to expand your viewpoint, and to alleviate anxiety. A certain amount of being idle is essential to a happy, contented life.

The ultimate tool in stress management is relaxation. Whether you take a siesta in a beach chair or snore beneath the stars, you will feel that you sleep better on a vacation. Your mind and body calm down when you adjust your focus and your pace.

One great way to relax is by reading a book especially when you fall asleep doing it. Fishing is somewhat of a reflective activity. Trying innovative sports like surfing and bowling may not be soothing but may suggest benefits to your health and well-being. No matter how active or inactive your vacation is, your mind will take it easy and your body will unwind. Basically, do the things you love, the things that bring meaning to you in your life, and see if you can mix it with the quiet and calm down time you need with the adventure side of yourself.

Explore Your Options

A vacation will give you the chance to see new places and seek new adventures. Some may take a trip abroad and explore the wonderful things beyond in search of discovery. Others may spend their vacations camping and hiking in mountains nearby. Still others prefer to volunteer in an activity in their community. There are a lot of choices to pick from. Choose what's best for you and for your health. The goal is to get out of your stress and daily obligations and take care of you.
