Skiing Arizona - Phoenix Ski Resorts
In a desert state and a city where the temperature reaches 38C on an average of 89 days a year, it may be a surprise that you can go skiing on real snow, on real mountains to come, only a few hours from the city of Phoenix, Arizona.
Snowfall in Phoenix itself is extremely rare, the city only an average of 5 days per year when the temperature is below freezing, and since records began, snow fell only seven times - the last of which was in January 2001 (the first snow has fallen in 22Years).
However, much to the enjoyment of the Phoenix skiers and snowboarders, there are several ski resorts within a few hours drive, which are perfect for a day or weekend and snow lovers should request "for the white stuff to satisfy.
Arizona Snowbowl is located in the San Francisco Peaks in the Coconino National Forest, just two hours drive from Phoenix. The ski area offers over 2300 meters of vertical drop and 32 scenic hiking trails, the 777 hectares and the coverage ArizonanDesert climate means the resort enjoys skiing and many sunny days.
Those who can quiet their skis to visit the Flagstaff Nordic Center, located just seven miles north of Snowbowl prefer. This area offers winter sports enthusiasts an extensive network of Nordic skiing and snowshoeing and sledding. Flagstaff instead supports a healthy racing scene with competitions in various lengths throughout the winter for cross country skiers.
The largest ski resort in Arizona isSunrise Park Resort, located in McNary in Arizona's White Mountains. Owned by the White Mountain Apache Tribe operates, consists of the territories of the eight elevators and more than 13 miles of cross-country studies.
And finally, if you're in the southernmost ski resort in the Untied States, head for Mount Lemmon Ski Valley ski. Although Tucson is more likely to conjure thoughts of sand instead of snow (several well-known seaside resorts are located here) - only an hourfrom the sea is skiing and snowboarding to be found. The area is small, with an elevation of only 290m, 3 lifts and a ski-able area of 200 hectares, but despite its southerly location of the place still manages to December to April and the scenic beauty that make the area more open to overlook mt. Lemmon, a popular ski resort.
Accommodation is in (or nearly all) of these cities in the form of winter cabins, lodges and motels. Be warned though - the people come here to skirather than the party so if you are looking for a wild time to be the better solution to stay in a hotel in Phoenix and just commute to the ski areas during the day.
