The adage that reads, "Go west, young man, go west" should be changed, would advise, at the far west of Arizona, Lake Havasu City. This area is justly known as a beach resort Arizona City. The majestic Colorado River, at this point in his 1400 + mile trip was dammed to Lake Havasu with an expansive 25,000 hectares. The fast-growing Lake Havasu City, includes a continental part and an artificial island, formed by dredging a stagnant stream and converts it into an integralPart of the lake / river.
We first visited Lake Havasu City about 1999, and by way of confession, not overly impressed. Maybe we were not accurate enough. But in 2008, through tours and other means, we saw first hand what is a thriving small city.
Lake Havasu City was founded in 1962 as the work of the industrialist and visionary, Robert McCulloch (1911-77). The lake itself goes back to the late 1930s, when Parker Dam was used to the Colorado River in the controlParts.
A unique talk about the city is that it took over a bridge in the U.S., lock stock and stone, from 1968-71 provides in London. When the authorities decided to auction its demise London London Bridge, McCulloch had the idea of tendering out and revitalization of the original stones on Lake Havasu. The project cost him about 7 million U.S. dollars, with most of the total transport of stone.
Of course, it seemed unique in the reconstructed London Bridge on footin Arizona. On the city side, under the bridge, a waterfront village is known as the English, with the London Bridge Hotel. We enjoyed walking and window shopping.
As expected, the city is the main source of income for tourism. However, with 8 boat manufacturers with a presence in the area, is the area for the supply of ships and sailing races and regattas yearly showcase their latest products found. It has rightly earned the title, watercraft capital of the world and hasHosts the annual International Jet Sports Boat Association (IJSBA) World Finals since 1982. Enjoyed from our hotel room balcony, we see many of the diverse watercraft.
Fishing, pedal boating, canoeing, kayaking, parasailing, windsurfing, diving and sailing are also available. What is beautiful is the possibility of the entire body, you will need the hour, half day or full day rentals. This area is becoming a destination of choice for water sports in the Southwest.
Country fans neednot get bored. There is much to do, a substantial amount of public shoreline, all within the city limits. This area includes London Bridge Beach, Rotary Park Beach and Windsor Beach. In addition to publication miles of coastline and beaches, Lake Havasu State Park also offers camping and boat-138 on campsites. We did it get exercise just by walking through the park.
Golfers are not forgotten, such as Lake Havasu City offers five distinctly different golf courses. You take care of Golfersall levels of expertise. In addition, they have more courses in the planning phase. Since we are not golfers, we can not experience firsthand.
One aspect of the region, we are impressed by the commitment of the people and the city to hold organized activities throughout the year for a vibrantly field desirable. Voluntary organizations construct the local parks and keep them up to date with improvements.
During a visit in February we came for the winter festival. We sawaround 250 stalls and 35-50K visitors for a craft, food and related demonstration sites along a cordoned-off main street. It had been years since we craft's tariff. Walking up and down Main, we found that included local suppliers tremendous color and history to our trip.
Parallel to this, about a week later, Winter Blast, an annual conference was the pyrotechnics manufacturer, planned. Every year there is a demonstration of the latest developments in their field. It culminates in a large, freeFireworks. Winter Blast is something we all look forward to observe, the Saturday after President's Day. This event was to be several with such enthusiasm, we try to describe a part of next year.
After the festival, we checked in Arizona all-only hotel right on the beach, The Nautical Inn http://www.nauticalinn.com. The 139 on the beach and lake view accommodations provide a relaxing atmosphere.
In the evening we drove a mile on the Island Mall & Brewery and enjoyed an excellentDinner at Shugrue's Restaurant & Bar http://www.shugrues.com. We enjoyed man-portions of halibut and pork chops, creamed baby spinach and stuffed baked potato, topped with bananas promotion for two people. Our young waiter, the son of the chief, spoke to us in the last two selections. In reviewing whether we were satisfied with these innovative new dishes, he did not realize that for us, she called back memories of the 60s and 70s.
We were fortunate to have the next morning by Jared LymanThe Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) http://www.golakehavasu.com give us a tour of the city and the surrounding area. The numerous parks in the city are easily accessible and well maintained. Jared has us out of town for a visit that the members of the chamber to expand and improve. Listening to describe it, how long it took to install his team stone gate posts and to forge some of the ways they appreciate us going.
We were surprised to learn that, according to Dr. Michael Rourke,Life Member of the Faculty Mohave Community College, "There are over 300 species of [water] Vogel, Lake Havasu either do at home or use it as a stop in their flight plan." Most who leave late in September and in the spring. Some good sites to also Mesquite Bay, south of Dike Road, Bill Williams Refuge, Parker Dam, and the Aha Khav Preserve. We were surprised by the number of species that we observed.
After a morning walk, over lunch at the Javelina's MexicanRestaurant http://www.javelinacantina.com/, we found the fajitas are an exceptional choice.
We were on our own after lunch and opted for an unforgettable boat tour around the lake in the Dixie Belle. Sailing from the English Village dock next to the London Bridge, told the tour was exceptional. We considered all of the many lighthouses around the lake.
The closest one can get to experiencing what it was on a steamboat on the Colorado River is powered by a replicated one (with two outboard engine rather than powered by poplar trees, as they were between 1852 to 1909). At this point would be the Colorado River and sailed non-stop with an excavator, barge, or paddle wheel.
The Dixie Belle, a 68-ton vessel is 51 + feet long and carries 122 passengers. One of the current captains, Gregg Smith, says the Dixie Belle repetition of an old steamer South. Captain Smith was piloting the ship since 2005. When recording of this tour is simple, one step backTime.
When dinner came around, we were still content from lunch. So we opted for dessert at Cold Stone. Let us return to our room, we enjoyed watching the lights over the lake.
The next morning we tried to breakfast at the Makai Cafe. Located under Shugrue's, Makai, was one of our favorite places. There was a lot more locals than tourists, and it was easy to understand why. We have tried the award-winning Toast Eggs Benedict and French. Our breakfast was a good, hot, with bigCustomer service and good coffee. We found it very reassuring, while we on the lake with a beautiful view over the London Bridge.
After breakfast we drove into town for a tour of the Lake Havasu City Historical Museum. Although quite small, is worth the time to spend an hour or so to visit.
We went for a lunch smoothie downtown. Then we went to the Nautical Inn at Robert P. Keller for the afternoon tour to meet, focusing on lighthouses. In addition to the LondonBridge, Lake Havasu has now 14 lighthouses, modeled on a smaller scale to be working on two lighthouses on the Great Lakes and East Coast. They serve as markers for the navigation instruments of the lake as well as an attraction for tourists. Bob is a Lake Havasu City historian and character re-enactors, the tours bring life. He has a combination tour for us, but we were particularly interested in how the idea emerged of the lighthouses. It began with his one-man effort is now an association and its memberstry to add several lighthouses in the year. His RV garage is the workshop for the club this club-going project.
That evening we had finished touring and decided to time with visiting friends from Chicago to spend. We took them and went to Angelina. The cozy Italian restaurant is reasonably related to the well-prepared food prices. It was a nice surface to a wonderful 3 night get-a-way.
Lake Havasu City promotes many annual events, including the Havasu Classic in April, as a classicCars roll into town. October offers the Relics and Rods Run to the Sun, with more than 1,000 cars from 1972 and earlier. October is also host to London Bridge Days, which is celebrated in two weeks. November brings the Chillin N 'Swilling Brewfest. In December, the water with more than one million Christmas lights adorned. Together with the Festival of Lights, a Holiday Boat Parade is part of the celebrations.
